Proofreading is the process of carefully going over a written report, story, or letter before the final copy is made. We proofread to be sure there are no mistakes, and when we find a mistake, we correct it… right? Unfortunately, for many students proofreading is a foreign concept. All too often students turn in a "finished" classroom assignment that is full of careless mistakes! This step-by-step unit was designed to help students learn, practice, and incorporate this vital skill into their written work.

Nonfiction Cloze Reading

The 80 cloze stories and activities in this unit were created to highlight and reinforce specific comprehension skills and increase fluency. Each story features an interesting science or social studies topic in a “bare-bones” format that offers no visual cues or story titles. Students must determine the main idea by using context clues only. After students have filled in the blanks with the appropriate words and re-read the story to make sure it makes sense, they can then create a title for the story to show their understanding of the main idea. The stories are sequential in length and reading difficulty, beginning with short paragraphs and building to full-page stories. Reading level ranges from grade 3 to grade 5. Fluency is promoted by requiring students to read each story at least twice. Follow-up questions focus on many different comprehension skills and help promote a broad understanding of the story. Reading Level 3-5 | Interest Level 3-12 Skills Covered Include: - Main idea - Drawing conclusions - Inference - Locating the answer - Predicting outcomes - Summarizing - Context clues - Sequence - Vocabulary - Finding facts/Reading for details - Fact or opinion - Analogy - Cause and effect - Choosing the right word - Summarizing - Resource skills - Prior knowledge 152 Pages includes an answer key.

These 50 nonfiction stories and activities are a sure-fire way to improve fluency and comprehension skills! Simple sentences and short, easy-to-read paragraphs are paired with compelling illustrations for a strong picture-text correspondence. Age-appropriate topics and a controlled vocabulary motivate students and help ensure success. Follow-up activities focus on specific reading skills such as finding the main idea, making inferences, reading for details, locating information, using context clues, and more. The activities featured in this book utilize the direct-approach fluency formula: read and re-read decodable words in connected text. Research shows that repeated readings turn slow, choppy readers into faster, smoother, more fluent readers. By doing the five follow-up activities that accompany each short paragraph, students will read the same paragraph a minimum of four times: 1. Read the paragraph when first presented with it. 2. Look back at the paragraph to respond to the follow-up exercises. 3. Complete the cloze reading activity involving the paragraph. 4. Follow the direction to “Re-read your completed paragraph to make sure it makes sense.” Reading Level 2-3
